My name is Julie Senko and I’ve always wanted to do pastels and it came up as a class in Grovedale Neighbourhood House. I suffer from depression and the doctors recommended I get out and mix with people so I thought this was a good way to learn and meet other people as well. I usually paint flowers from my own garden and things that inspire me that I can put some passion into. I like the fact that I can blend the colours and if you’re not happy with it, you just brush it off, put another layer on and it all comes good! My advice to anyone who hasn’t tried art before is to remember that everything you do is a learning episode and it doesn’t have to be perfect. The more you do, the more you learn. Be with other people who have the same interest or you need to do it this way or that, just to keep you moving along. I think if you’re at home, you’d stop and put it to one side. When you’re in Jen’s class, you’ve got other people who can show you how to do things. Jen set me on a challenge not to do flowers anymore so I’m currently working on a merry-go-round horse and I’m loving it.
